Wisconsin - Environmental Education

     ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION

The Environmental Education's mission was to promote and develop knowledge and concern for the natural outdoor environment through outdoor activities and environmental education.

The grant money was divided among 11 individual projects meeting three expectations:

  1. Share ideas and network.
  2. Document with other grant recipients' projects with photos and stories describing accomplishments.
  3. Assist in some way in building the "Northern Outdoors" capacity to continue to carry out its mission.

The projects were from across Northwestern Wisconsin. Unfortunately, the only project that involved any kind of technology was the Rusk County Land and Water Conservation Department. Their project involved working with the Rusk County Wildlife Restoration Association (WRA), Rusk County Health and Human Services (HHS) and six local school districts.

This project involved students from the different area schools working for five weeks on a local environmental problem. Pictures and video were taken to show the media, county board members, WRA members and parent.

Other projects included a women's archery class, an ecosystem class, a shoreline restoration project and an herbal garden. All of these projects are complete, and the original MIRA group is not meeting.

Partnerships

Collaborations included working with the Department of Natural Resources, the Rusk County Wildlife Restoration Association and local school districts. These partners donated time, material and money to support the MIRA educational projects.

As a result of MIRA, an Adopt-a-River project has been started, and two grants were awarded to the newly formed Friends of Toscobia Trail project.
