STEERING COMMITTEE

One of the characteristics that makes this Steering Committee so strong is that all residents in the Cluster are invited to participate, and many do Any MIR A community team member from any community may attend a Steering Committee meeting. It is not unusual to see 25 people at any given Steering Committee meeting, and, in one case, 45 attended. One issue concerns the size o f the Steering Committee and its ability to successfully accomplish tasks.

From its initial meetings, the Committee established a process that was meant to set a pattern for other workshops. The Steering Committee looked to each community to host one workshop. The Steering Committee then looked for volunteers for a number o ("subcommittees to complete tasks. Catering. providing supplies, administering evaluation, and selecting trainers were the province of the subcommittees.

The Steering Committee fulfilled many of the goals it had set. Shared responsibility created empowerment. Youth participation was evident throughout the process. At each step, young people participated in the decision-making process. Young people were responsible for conducting telephone interviews with potential trainers. Each workshop session was conducted jointly by a MIRA-approved trainer and a local youth co-facilitator
