CONCERNED YOUTH

The Concerned Youth team initially signed a contract with the Salvation Army to use a part of their land for the Oil City Skate Park. This contract was rescinded due to financial problems experienced by the Salvation Army after September 11, 2001.

Most original Concerned Youth team members have now either graduated from high school or have lost interest in the project.

Partnerships

Cindy McBride, the only adult member of the MIRA group, has recently partnered with the City of Oil City and the YMCA to resurface an old tennis court and install a new fence to create an area for the skate park.

Work on the skate park has brought new interest from local youth and therefore new members to the MIRA team.

No additional funds were leveraged for the project; however, Oil City paid to resurface the tennis court and the YMCA provided staff for the skate park.

The skate park will be part of the Youth Alternatives new web page designed by a local youth, with server support from the Venango Economic Development Corporation.

Leadership

The teens made all of the decisions after the Steering Committee approved the skate park project. At first, the teens were working without a plan, Cindy said. Then, they learned the importance of a business plan and teamwork. It was the lack of activity that led most of them to leave the skate park idea behind.
