YOUTH TECHNOLOGY ENTERPRISE
The Technology Gap, Youth Entrepreneurs Group and Mentoring teams merged into one group called Youth Technology Enterprise (YTE). The Technology Gap team's original goal was to bring the latest technology to northwest Pennsylvania and thereby close the technology gap between urban and rural Pennsylvania. Youth Entrepreneurs wanted to encourage and recruit young people to become entrepreneurs. The Mentoring Group planned to develop a way to build one-on-one and peer relationships with adolescents.
The merger has produced a group of youth from several schools who set up local computer networks, create web sites, teach computer literacy classes and manage the Oil City cyber café soon to be up and running through Heather Mohnkern and the Hope House Ministries.
Partnerships
Presently, YTE is exploring the designing of web pages for non-profits. They continue to provide computer literacy and web design classes.
Leadership
Stephen Kosack from the Venango Area Community Foundation provided the original idea of a youth business and took the necessary steps to form the group. After the merge, YTE decisions were made by the YTE board of directors comprised mainly of young people ages fourteen to nineteen.
Having the young people take the leadership positions, make the decisions and have accountability for their projects makes for a productive team.
