FEDERAL HOCKING

Federal Hocking used its MIRA funds to create a community computer resource center. The center is located at Federal Hocking High School and is accessible to everyone in the community while the school is open. All the equipment bought with the MIRA funds, such as an iMac, E-machine, couch, scanner, and printer, are located in what used to be the school band closet.

Federal Hocking's computer technician, Lori Springer, is currently in charge of the project. The original MIRA project was her daughter Courtney's senior project. Courtney arranged the computer resource center's location, bought the computers and partnered with the school's internship coordinator to recruit high school students to manage the center.

Courtney has graduated and moved out of state to attend college. Her partnership with the internship coordinator fell through leaving a computer resource center with no student interns.

Ms. Springer hopes to move the computer resource center to the Coolville library for community access instead of turning the computers over to the school as the Federal Hocking school superintendent and fiscal agent have suggested.

Leadership

Having this project be the work of one person may have led to its current incomplete status. Once Courtney graduated, the project changed ownership and just exactly who owned the computers came into question. Perhaps if there had been a team to see the project through to completion and to gain or build community consensus on how the project was to be handled, the computers would be better utilitized.
