TAOS MOUNTAIN WIND

The Taos Mountain Wind team agreed to develop a community newsletter for the Taos Pueblo. Community youth were to produce the newsletter in cooperation with the Red Willow Learning Center. The newsletter would contain coverage of current community topics and information on marketing Native arts and crafts.

With MIRA funds, video and audio recording equipment were purchased. Taos News (local paper) trained the youth in newsletter design. Computers, office space and technical assistance were provided through MIRA grant funds.

Partnerships

Shawn Duran, Taos Pueblo Education Division and tribe member, plans to approach the Taos High School Language Program, the BIA K-8 School and an entrepreneur group, Taos Publishing Company, for volunteers and funds.

Leadership

This team really didn't get started until about six months after receiving MIRA funds. Three newsletter issues were produced. The lack of volunteers and community news has temporarily stopped production.

In context of their culture, their leadership style was very open to change. At first, there was a need to disseminate community news. Now the team has disbanded until needed again.
