PRAIRIE VISIONS

In Benkelman I met with Cherry Carter who had taken over the work at Dundy County Senior Services that had been performed by June Magnani. Because of the stress associated with the previous job, she now worked at the hospital, and the three of us met in the small cafeteria. June's project, Prairie Visions, was aimed at increasing interaction between students from Paula Parker's class at the local high school and old people by using ICT. Her group included directors of senior centers in Chase, Wauneta, Hitchcock, and Perkins counties. June also said that meeting for training had been difficult, and there were differences in what she called "ideology" between the groups. Many of the seniors became interested in email and eventually getting their own computers. The Prarie Visions web site has a record of some of the workshops and closes with the upbeat statement: "Each of the directors plans to stay in contact with the other centers through e-mail and possibly lunch at one of the centers from time to time." However, it was evident from June that had not happened. She was not using email, and asked me to say hello to Caroline Carpenter, as if she no longer had anyway of contacting her. It seemed that, for some, this technology was an interesting interlude but did not take hold and become integrated into their lives as the telephone and television have. However, Cherry Carter was planning more training for her seniors, and the activities director in Wray, Colorado, just across the border from Dundy County, was promoting the use of the MIRA computer which sat prominently in the entrance hall of the community center. The success of many of these projects depend as much on continuity of leadership and continuous volunteer effort as it does on an initial energetic champion who then moves on to something new, something more challenging than the maintenance of an exisiting project.
