KOSCIUSKO

Mamie Cotton operates the Newfound Youth Development Center, Inc in Kosciusko, Mississippi. A printer by profession, Mamie is six credit hours away from earning a BS in English and Communications and has recruited her children, friends and family to help with this MIRA project.

Since 2000, the Center has served as an after-school tutoring and activity program for low-income youth attending the Attalla County schools.

There is a great need in this area for programming that helps underprivileged children excel in school - especially for young black men who struggle with science and math. This past year, some 40 children participated at any one time. A core group of 12 stayed with the program as regulars. Eight of these children made the honor roll in school.

The after-school program tutoring project is closed now. Little attention was paid to fundraising during the school year, and additional funds needed to operate the program were sourced from Ms. Cotton's personal financial resources.

Partnerships

Ms. Cotton only collaborated with the Attalla County School System. The next fundraiser will target local business owners to sponsor the program.

Leadership

This MIRA project was basically a team of one. Even though a board was chosen and helped in brainstorming ideas, Ms. Cotton, her friends and family ran the Center.
