A VISION FOR OCEAN VIEW

K'au is a large district of almost 1000 square miles with less than 6000 people spread over a number of small towns and enormous subdivisions that are sparsely settled and poorly served by the county or utilities. As in Kona, MIRA activity in this area focused on community surveys for input to the country planning process. "A Vision for Ocean View" is an excellent example of what a small MIRA team could accomplish with the $15,000 grant. No more than one-third of the funds could be spent on hardware, and in the case of Ocean View most of the funds went for printing and postings of mailings including the surveys. Had they relied only on electronic distribution, many people would have been excluded. The survey reflects the desire of most in the community to have more services including police, phone, water, waste disposal, communications, transportation, education and fire safety, and it shows that a strong team of volunteers used various methods to communicate with those who were less involved.
